OLD BUSINESS:
CoA – 126 North Main Street (Paint, Mortar, Brick Replacement)
Shirlon Harris had previously submitted a Certificate of Appropriateness application for paint and brickwork at 126 North Main Street. She plans to use the same paint colors specified in her application for 128/130 North Main Street (Sherwin Williams American Heritage Roycroft Copper Red, Rockwood Sash Green and Naval Blue). The brickwork is also similar to the work at 128/130 North Main Street – where the HPC had some concerns. This application was tabled on November 20, 2014. Ms. Harris was not present at that meeting and the HPC wanted to make sure she understood and addressed their concerns regarding work at 128/130 North Main Street.
The HPC discussed the way the mortar and brickwork were being done at 128/130 North Main Street.
They expressed their concern about the unevenness of the rows of brick that were repaired. Mr. Sample addressed the commission. He stated that he was the person who was doing the brickwork. He told the HPC that he was attempting to follow the contour of the building – which was not straight. The wall is bowed. CEO Vendetti explained to Mr. Sample that the bowing wall needed to be repaired in order to correctly replace the brick.
Members also discussed mortar color. It appeared that the initial batch was mixed correctly, but other parts were not. After discussion with Mr. Sample and review of recent photographs, it was noted that the part of the repair in question was an old repair. The HPC told Mr. Sample that based on the new information they were “ok” with the mortar itself.
As for the brickwork – replacing/repointing, Ms. Harris is requesting permission to use new brick which she would like to paint. This repair would be along the alley wall. She stated that she is having difficulty matching old brick for this repair. The HPC asked Ms. Harris to provide them with a sample of the new brick she would like to use, as well as the cut sheet for the brick and a paint chip for the color she would like to paint. The HPC would also like Ms. Harris to show that she has attempted to get old brick and show that it is too difficult to match.
Ms. Harris stated that she understood and would provide the requested information to the HPC one (1) week prior to next month’s meeting.
The HPC tabled the CoA for 126 North Main Street until next month’s meeting pending the requested information.
